Synopsis of State of Alaska Laws

A person may not hunt big game or help someone else take big game in the same day they fly in a light airplane, until 3:00 a.m. following the day.

A big game metal locking tag may be used to satisfy the tagging requirements for another species of equal or lower value.

A person must obtain the proper or equivalent tags and harvest ticket before shooting an animal.

A person can not shoot game on another hunter’s license or tag.

A guide may not shoot game for a client, however, we will shoot if we feel it is necessary to protect life or property, or prevent a wounded animal from escaping.

A person can shoot only one of any of Alaska's big game species except black bear. If a wounded animal escapes, it is BearUp Adventure's policy that hunting for that species ends, except for that animal.

All edible meat of big game animals (except bears, wolves, and wolverine) must be salvaged.

Other Information

Weapons

Hunters should be comfortable and proficient at handling and shooting their weapon. Given the stamina of Alaskan big game animals, the caliber of weapon to use and shot placement are very important. We recommend bolt-action, center-fire rifles, a minimum caliber of .300 Winchester magnum for bear and moose and a minimum caliber of .270 for sheep and caribou. Quality scopes with good low-light capability and partition-type bullets are also highly recommended. Rifles should be sighted in dead on at 200 yards and hunters should be able to place all shots in a six-inch group at that distance. Muzzle-loaders, hand-gunners, and bow hunters are welcome. By State law, muzzle-loaders must use at least a .45 caliber and 250 grain or larger slugs, and bow hunters must use a bow capable of casting a broad head-tipped arrow at least 175 yards horizontally. Additionally, arrows must be tipped with broad heads of at least one ounce (437.5 grains). Electronic devices (except unlighted video or single-lens-reflex cameras) scopes and mechanical devices that anchor a knocked arrow at full or partial draw unaided by the bow hunter are prohibited. If you are planning on a bow hunt please review the definitions and restrictions for archery equipment on the State of Alaska web site www.state.ak.us/adfg/wildlife/wildman.htm Alaska does not require OMT clothing be worn. Beginning on August 1, 2002, hunter education certification will be required for young hunters in Game Units 7, 13, 14, 15, and 20 so if you are planning on a hunt in Alaska and born after January 1, 1986 let the guide know so current regulations can be checked.

Trophies

Cape and skins are cared for in the field, where they are fleshed, salted, and dried for flight to Anchorage at season's end, with antlers and horns. If it is convenient for trophies to accompany clients back to Anchorage, we will arrange this. However, if flights are full, antlers must be left behind and brought in on a later flight. We deliver all trophies to Foster's Taxidermy, or Knight's Taxidermy. Both are very professional and dependable expediting and taxidermy firms. They check the skins and capes and do any touch-up fleshing or salting they feel is necessary. They also boil and bleach skulls before shipping, as some freight companies will not take the trophies otherwise. They will crate and ship your raw trophies to the address of your choice (at your cost) or you may consider having them mount your trophies. They do excellent work. Please contact them for a current mailing address and price list of their services.

Meat

Our hunts are trophy hunts and most hunters do not want the game meat. All edible meat is recovered. We encourage all hunters to take a few steaks or a couple of roasts home, but if you want more please notify your guide in advance of the hunt. Small packages can be carried in your luggage and kept frozen or chilled in the hotel freezers. We discourage attempts to get large quantities of meat home. We are not prepared to process meat, but this can be done at your expense in Anchorage or Yakutat, Alaska.

Conditioning

Hunting big game in Alaska is typically physically demanding and requires that you be at your personal best. The better your physical condition the better chances you have of success and the more you will enjoy yourself. Start an active aerobic and strength training program several months before your hunt. If you smoke, quit. If you are overweight, trim down. Take brisk walks while wearing your hunting boots to break them in. Climb up and down the stairs in a local office building/stadium or work out on a stair/step climber type of exercise equipment, several times a week. When the stair/step climbs get easy, put on a backpack or large daypack and slowly start adding weights. Work your way up to about 30 pounds. Weight lifting (e.g. squats, leg presses, leg curls, and leg extensions) will also strengthen your legs and improve your hill climbing ability.

Liquor and Drinking

Your success and our reputation depend upon keen senses and willing bodies. Therefore, we do not furnish liquor or beer, and drinking is discouraged while in the field. However, if you want to bring some of your favorite spirits for a traditional toast or nightcap in the evenings, please do.

Smoking

We discourage smoking while in the field. However, if you do smoke, please do not decide to quit while on your hunt with us. Bring enough smokes for your entire stay, as well as for your friends and others who have decided to quit while on their Alaska hunt.

Weather, Travel, and Schedules

Nearly all transportation is by light aircraft. We charter local, experienced air taxi operators with knowledge of the area an excellent safety records to transport hunters from the point of outfitting to the hunting camps. All flying depends strictly on wind and weather. It is not unusual to lose some days to Alaska's typically stormy fall weather. Our hunts are set up to anticipate bad weather and our schedules have time built in for weather hold-ups.

We assume no responsibility for meals or lodging if weather prevents us from flying you out to the hunting camp on the first scheduled day our your hunt and you get held over in Anchorage or Yakutat, Alaska. Conversely, if you get weathered in at the hunting camp, you will not be charged for your extended stay. Do not schedule your flight home immediately following the last day of your hunt.

You, your travel agent, or your booking agent should make your airline and hotel reservations as soon as we have confirmed your hunting dates. Fall is a busy season in Alaska and flights/hotels fill up early. We will help you make local hotel reservations upon request.
